In particular, it discusses the role of the topic sentence in expository paragraphs through four writing dimensions: the syntactic, communicative, cognitive, and semantic dimensions. First, the syntactic dimension and its overfocus in the product approach to teaching writing are put into perspective. Later, the communicative, cognitive, and semantic dimensions of writing are integrated into the analysis of the topic sentence.
