Abstract
"This thesis reports on a collective case study that sought to shed light on the seven scientists‘ immersion processes as they moved from the periphery to the center of their professional community. It also addresses the strategies and challenges they undertook when writing scientific articles in English for publication purposes. The study was carried out at a large public university in central Mexico in the faculties of physics and mathematics. Its primary aim was to understand the immersion processes followed by seven scientists when moving from the periphery to the center of their community of practice. It also sought to understand the different strategies and writing processes participants use to successfully achieve publication in English. Research main data were collected via interviews. Participants‘ curricula vitae were also used as a secondary source of data. Most of this research is based on the theory of Communities of Practice (Wenger, 1998), and inspired by the work of Bazerman et al., 2012. Other scholars (e.g. Flowerdew, 1999, 200, 2001) have addressed the issue of writing strategies used to write for publication through the lens of English native speakers. This study addresses the same issue from the perspective of seven non-native Englishspeaking scientists."
