Abstract
"This study focuses on rapport, it aims to understand the way teachers establish it inside their classrooms while utilizing the multimodal discourse analysis. It also examines which multimodal elements teachers use to establish rapport, as well as how effective multimodal interactions on rapport are. The research takes place at a public university in central Mexico, the participants are three teachers of three different nationalities, and they are responsible for language classrooms. The three teachers were studied trough an observation sheet and recordings of their classes, that allowed a confirmation of what was observed as well as deeper analysis. Some extracts of the recordings are presented and analyzed from a multimodal approach. This project intends to shed some light on the importance and the process of building rapport in any place that deals with student-teacher interaction. After finishing the data analysis it was concluded that rapport is indeed an important element inside the classroom, and the quality of the interactions was significantly different from the teacher that tried to establish it from the ones that did not tried as hard. As this study was made in a University it may be interesting to observe this phenomenon in other levels of education."
