dc.description.abstract"The temporomandibular disorders (TMD) according to the American Dental Association represents a set of conditions of biopsychosocial and multifactorial origin which show signs and symptoms such as pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), in the preauricular area and / or muscles of mastication. TMD is often accompanied by sounds in the TMJ (clicking and crepitus), deviations or restrictions in jaw movement and headaches. The TMD is the major cause of pain in the orofacial region without dental origin. Some authors suggest that TMD occurs predominantly between 25 and 44 and that these disorders decline with age (7,8). However, other researchers reportsimilarly higher prevalence around 38 and 52 years old (5,9). The TMD are more common in women than men in a ratio of 3:1 (10-12).Epidemiological studies show that within the adult population, 41% reported at least one symptom and 56% reported at least a sign associated with TMD. In the world's population, the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders ranges from 38% to 63.5% (3,13-15). Within Mexican populations, Casanova and colleagues reported that 46.9% had TMD, specifically disc displacement followed by muscle disorders. In a previous study in Puebla (10) on a group of stomatology students, 54% had signs and symptoms of TMD, and 50% of these reported an average pain duration of 12 months".
