Academic writing: a syllabus proposal based on a mixed methods analysis of argumentative essays

Abstract
"The present study is at various levels that range from a syntactical level to a rhetorical level. A text is constructed using clauses that are combined in various ways resulting in the types of sentences known as simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. This is the level that is more directly related to the grammatical sub-skill. An argumentative essay is one of the most difficult types of writing since it demands from the writer not only mastery of the sentence but also beyond the sentence level. The main purpose of this investigation is to explore argumentation in academic writing in the form of argumentative essays. The argumentative essays collected using a scheduled writing task, which can be seen in Appendix A, were written by advanced-level students at the faculty of language in BUAP. The analysis of the texts involves four concepts associated with writing. At the sentence level, the types of sentences are described. At the paragraph level, coherence and cohesion, logic, and rhetorical moves are analyzed. These two levels of analysis are employed to score the essays so that students’ communicative needs can be identified".
