Abstract
"This work is going to help students who are studying English as a foreign
language at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo., in Preparatoria Dos.
They are good students because they have passed the A2 level of the Common
European Framework or TOEFL with 450 points and do not have to attend English
classes anymore. However, they show a poor appreciation of the culture of their
own native language. Some of them have lived in the United States or have
studied English in private schools, and it seems like when they learnt English, they
forgot many things about their own culture.
This situation is a problem for many of them because they know that they
needto practice for maintaining their fluency and not to forget vocabulary, grammar
etc. Theteachers of English and the people of DUI (Departamento Universitario de
Idiomas) are worriedabout this and are looking for a way to help them. To further investigate this group, some of them were interviewed, and It was
discovered that most of them show negative attitudes toward their own
culture, especiallythe cultural cringe problem (refusal of their own culture). It has
been seen that this refusal is generally against the ethnic people"
