Abstract
"This research explores one of the problems that ELT students of the Faculty of Languages of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) face in regards to the development of the speaking skill. Arising from this situation, three research questions are the starting point in this investigation with the objective to know from the perspective of in-service teachers, the reasons many students struggle with the development of speaking English as a foreign language. To collect the data, teachers of the subject ‘Target Language’ (I, II, III or IV) were surveyed through a questionnaire, which consisted of 7 questions (5 opened questions and 2 closed questions) in order to explore teachers’ opinions and how they conceive speaking in their classes. Teachers who took this survey had different years of experience in Teaching English. After the process in which instruments were collected, data were analysed to find the most significant aspects. In this section the experience of teachers was highlighted as an influencing factor in the way teachers planned their classes to practice speaking in the classroom; it was also found that teachers recognized the importance of speaking, however not always they did activities related with this ability and they usually preferred to put in practice activities which did not imply a high level of competence in speaking. In regards to gender, age and teaching experience, it was noticed that teachers see the role of a teacher in different ways".
