dc.description.abstract"By considering the superpositions between the closest isolated atomic states, a description of warped spectra is achieved for systems from a dimeric configuration of potential wells to aperiodic structures with specific spectra, passing through translationally invariant matrices. For the first system, a comparison is made between the predictions of a tight bond model with non-orthogonal orbitals and the experimental spectrum of a pair of ceramic discs, successfully describing the phenomenon of asymmetric energy division. The Wannier functions are investigated and calculated for both the dimeric and the periodic case. The phase freedom for localization adjustment of these latter functions is illustrated with a couple of examples. A secular equation for the warped spectrum of a compact set of potential wells allows the engineering of nearly equally spaced energy eigenvalues. Then, the concept of an all-electronic clock is briefly discussed and the coherent evolution of wave packets for a particular aperiodic configuration is presented. Finally, a numerical method is introduced for the study of the transport properties of one-dimensional displaced potentials. These considerations may be relevant in the miniaturization of artificial crystals, as well as in the fabrication of an isochronous electronic device that is estimated to operate at higher frequencies".
