“Exchange programs are recognized to provide great opportunities to learn a languages and culture. According to Freed, “It has been assumed that the combination of immersion in the native speech community, combined with formal classroom learning, creates the best environment for learning a second language” (2015,p1). Each year thousands of students depart looking for education abroad experiences with the expectation of being “fluent” in the target languages living and studying in a natural context having a cultural exchange and enriching their global vision. During the SLA (Second Language Acquisition) process emerge different aspects affecting positively and negatively their learning process that is why it is important to explore and understand how second language acquisition works, for this reason it is important to establish the individual differences, social and psychological factors’ role on SLA, the analysis of each factor has the purpose of exploring its influence in the success or failure of second language acquisition. Second language acquisition process has been one of the most important and studied by linguists through time, Krashen (1985) pointed out that: Second language acquisition is the product of a subconscious process very similar to the process children utilize when they acquire their first language. It requires meaningful interaction in the target language - natural communication.”
A case study exploring the differences reported between adult and child L2 learners

"The current research is concerned with how age affects foreign language learning. The importance of the students‟ age is a vital factor that intervenes in this process (Ellis, 1989). Learning a foreign language could be more or less successful depending on the maturity of the person. Age is a factor in the foreign language learning process that is sometimes not understood by course instructors and insufficient attention is often given to the age of the learner. A second language (L2) according to Sharwood Smith (1994) stands as a cover term for any language other than the first language learned by a given learner or a group of learners a) irrespective of the type of learning environment and b) irrespective of the number of the other non-native languages possessed by the learner. Krashen (1982) maintained that adult second- language learners have at their disposal two distinct and independent ways of developing competence in a second language acquisition, which is a “subconscious process identical in all important ways to the process children utilize in acquiring their first language” and learning which is a “conscious process” that results in knowing about the knowledge."
A classroom research with five year olds using visual materials

“The aim of this research is to evaluate the use of adapted materials to develop the speaking skills with 3rd graders. This research was carried out by using a qualitative approach. It was completed through five classes and observations in order to realize what was the impact that visual materials had on third graders and if the use of materials foster children to speak. This research was carried out in a public school named “Estancia infaltil y preescolar Margarita Torres”. Five lesson plans were applied, containing the materials that we intended to adapt, and the observations based on field notes in order to evaluate in detail what the students’ reactions were. Based on the observations and the lesson plans, materials had a meaningful impact on children learning, students were able to use vocabulary words to produce the language and say complete sentences. The results were produced by the motivation obtained through the adaptation of visual material and the way that we developed these materials for several activities and topics. Students reacted positively at the moment of presenting the materials; even when the materials were already used for other activities. This project can be a reference for students, teachers and further researchers.”
A comparative study between the translation strategies used by students from two curricular programs at a Ba in Translation

“In the process of translating documents, new translators may follow different paths to accomplish their goals. In this regard this study explores the strategies that students belonging to two different plans (curriculums) on a BA in translation followed to do translation work. Drawing on interview data the study examines the knowledge the students hold about translation theories and how such knowledge is implemented in their translation practices. The study examines two groups of students studying under two different curricular plans (The Fenix and Minerva plans). Findings show significant differences and similarities between the two groups of students’ awareness about translation theories and the actual procedures they followed in their translation practices”.
A comparison of english-spanish sound systems in a group of students of third semester LEI-Facultad de Lenguas students

“Sometimes pronunciation in english results a little difficult for people who are not familiar with the pronunciation patterns of the language. Also, because people follow mother tongue pronunciation patterns when articulating sounds in a foreign language. The process of english as a foreign language (EFL) acquisition is markedly different from native-language patterns. Exposure to English language and contact with native speakers is important to improve pronunciation. It is related that contact with english language influences the way a non-native speaker pronounces in a better way english language than people that are not exposed to the language. Talking about phonetics and phonology it is assumed that spanish speakers that learn english as a foreign language frequently, make less mistakes than others that are not so exposed to english language. To illustrate, english sounds produced by a group of LEI-students of third semester in Facultad de Lenguas of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla will be compared with a native english speaker in order to identify the pronunciation patterns of each, and to prove if his/her first language influences in the foreign language acquisition”.
A comparison of second language acquisition perceptions in an immersion context as opposed to a foreign context

“This investigation seeks to highlight a central feature of the process of English learning, namely, the context where learning takes place. From my personal experience and that classmates and friends have shared with me about learning English language, some problems of understanding are present as well as different issues in speaking, writing, listening or reading skills in specific contexts. These issues led me to wonder if students that have learnt English in an immersed context, as immigrants that live in the USA, present similar issues or problems when acquiring the English language. And, if they share the same motivations that university students have. The context where learning takes place seems to be determinant in the success of} learning. Some university students present issues regarding their English proficiency and cannot speak in an efficient way but also those students who live in the U.S. A. Therefore, the question remains; is it better learning English as a foreign or as a second language? Generally, it is thought that students that have lived in the U.S.A. have better opportunities to find better jobs or better opportunities as well as acquiring the language in a better way since they are in constant interaction with native speakers and the environment”.
A conjunction analysis of argumentative essays

"According to Halliday & Hasan (1976), cohesion is the result of the relation between two elements mutually presupposing. The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the cohesive devices and the inconsistencies involved in the realization of adversative and causal relations in a sample of eleven argumentative essays written by undergraduate non-native speakers. To so do, an elicitation technique was used in order to get preliminary data. Then, it was analyzed according to Halliday & Hassan‘s cohesion analysis model. Because it shows the type and distance of the cohesive relation, this model gave us a comprehensive glance at the cohesive features of the sample. For instance, lexical relations were unexpectedly predominant, and it was discovered that the cohesive inconsistencies resulted from the use of inadequate or unnecessary forms, and from non-concordant presupposed elements. This information will be useful to reach a better understanding of the writing process and the development of more accurate teaching strategies".
A descriptive study of a needs analysis in ESP for Criminology students

"Criminology students need to get a proficient English level in their professional field when they join the job market in an international context. Research has shown that there exists a significant and wide gap between what students in higher education are able to achieve in English Foreign Language and what truly is designed in a syllabus. This study aims to explore and identify the specific English language needs that the BUAP Criminology students have. Based on a review of literature on needs analysis and its approaches, this study was conducted by qualitative research and also a descriptive methodology applying a questionnaire. This instrument was provided by e-mail to thirty BUAP criminology students who were asked to respond to eleven closed-ended and open-ended questions using different types of likert scales. Analysis of the responses demonstrates that criminology students´ necessities are not successfully covered in order to learn effectively English Foreign Language and apply it in a real international job context. The findings indicate that EFL courses incorporated in the Criminology BA do not fulfill the students´ requirements, and on this basis, it is recommended that ESP programs are implemented based on the needs analysis of students".
A diagnosis implementing montessori principles into an official kindergarten to teach english

“In the last years education in Mexico had forgotten to include in school curriculum a second language that could improve the possibilities in children to compete with persons all around the world. Recently S.E.P. (Secretaría de Educación Pública) pedagogues have changed the high school curriculum and implemented a second language which objective was to teach English as a foreign language to a teenagers, but this really was not working because students needed a higher level at university. As the time passes by they realized that it was necessary to implement a second language since the beginning. That is how PRONI (PROgrama Nacional de Inglés) appears in 2017, with the aim to improve student’s competences since kindergarten. This research will show which the main deficiencies are while teaching kindergarten kids a foreign language, what teacher methods or techniques could be changed. These deficiencies will be identified through an observation that will be focused in three main areas; children development, classroom material and classroom environment, the researcher will work one day per grade in order to obtain the necessary information. The adequacies will be suggested according with what Montessori theory suggests as the best way children acquire knowledge naturally”.
A discourse analysis of the goals of the writing skill on the lei program and its relation with the CEFR

"Interest in academic writing bids fair in our days to become a key feature when exploring higher education. Especially in English Language Teaching (ELT), writing practices enfold mechanical concerns, but at the same time social and cultural issues at different levels. This investigation attempts to shed some light in this issue. The general purpose of this study is to explore the writing skill in the curriculum of the Licenciatura en la Enseñanza del Inglés (LEI) at the Faculty of Languages of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. The specific objective of this study is to compare this program´s goals in regards to writing to those proposed by the Common European Framework of References (CEFR). Though, it may not be evident to the outside viewer, students in this Faculty experience a complex dependency in regards to their skills in English language writing. Some of the reasons may be found in the discourse proposed by the curriculum. Besides using a quantitative methodology of comparison in regards to the programs to identify and illustrate the differences and similarities between both documents, this investigation includes also critical discourse analysis as a qualitative approach".
A lexical analysis of business phrases from three different english for specific purposes books for LEI students

“One of the most important areas of english for specific purposes in our days is the area of business where people has to create different relationships that could enhance a good relationship and interaction that could bring benefits to the companies where people is working. About the importance of the professional development of a person using english in the business field. Xu (2010) says that: “The business correspondence initiates and maintains the business relationship between the trade members, and its quality concerns the success or failure of a business deal to a large extent. A well-written business letter will not only accelerate the ongoing deal, but also create a trustful relationship between the partners, which will bring potential benefits in future contacts. On the contrary, if a business letter is inappropriately drafted, it will cause misunderstandings during the transaction, and this may bring successive troubles in the following steps or even result in a total failure of the deal”.
A linguistic analysis of the strategies and procedures used in the traslation of online advertisements: the case of Sony and Apple

“The aim of this research is to analyze and discuss the strategies used in two advertisements in order to find out if the purpose of the message is reached in both cultures, so that the novice translators may consider them at the moment of translating advertisement texts. The research is basically oriented to any person who is interested or related to the field of translation, however, it is pretended to help those novice translators or students of this area who do not have experience in translating advertisements and may face many problems at the moment of performing this task. This research is specifically limited to the translation of two advertisements of the following companies: SONY and APPLE. Another text type could be mentioned but will not be analyzed. Moreover, the researchers do not pretend to deepen on the marketing field itself, however, some definitions of this area may be given in order to complement the understanding of this research”.
A need analysis for an esp course applied to industrial engineers

“Nowadays it is very important to any university student to learn a foreign language. Transnational corporations are increasing in our country and their needs carry out the hiring of professional employees that use a universal language. Robinson (1998) points out, each year, more students choose to study English language, many of them because they need to use English in their work. Many of those students have very specific reasons for wanting to improve their language skills: for these students, courses that fall under the heading English for Specific Purpose (ESP) hold a particular appeal. In Mexico just the 13% of population speak English according to Mitofsky survey applied in 2013 it‟s a controversial fact and specialized and technical English language is less common. Due to the globalization, English has been used as an international language, and has affected many domains of life and society, one amazing impact is in science and technology, the achievements and developments have involved English language as a powerful tool to share information and breakthroughs and Internet has a star role in this. In deed English has become “the established language of science and technology” (FortanetGomez and Raisanen, 2008 cited by Vaičiūnienė and Užpalienė, 2010)”.

Our project is mainly a Needs Analysis based on and adapted to the Munbian Communication Needs Processor (CNP), which contains important aspects that support the needs profile of students."
A needs analysis for a basic ESP language course for pilots and air traffic controllers

"The present work has been urged by the crucial need to design an adequate syllabus for pilot and air traffic controller students. The growing demands of the globalization process have pushed the aviation industry to introduce new reforms without always taking into consideration neither the actual students’ needs nor the societal context. Therefore, the researcher has undergone a needs analysis in order to determine exact lacks and needs that would permit students to grasp effective linguistic efficiency and consequently, to attain the targeted objective. Misunderstanding between pilots and air traffic controllers is an international problem. The use of slang and idiomatic phrases, combined with strong regional accents and the failure to use the standard phraseologies recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) lead to an imminent danger if pilots and air traffic controllers do not pay close attention to the vocabulary they are using in their everyday work."
A Practice Test Course for Intermediate students using an ESP Approach

"This is a proposal of skill syllabus to complement and adapt interesting and challenging material from different Preliminary English books that contribute in the improvement of language skills. This project was conducted by an ESP approach and needs analysis, Smoak (2003) argued that “Observation and analysis are essential to find out what the real language needs are” (p.23). This report a mixed method study concerning these specific group of High school students, they study in a Private Language Institution called Dynamic Learning School, who require a preparation and training in order to approve successfully a Preliminary English Test. The purpose of this paper is to identify students´ needs in order to develop a syllabus, as well as, select authentic material considering the content, and the information students’ provided. This paper first presents some aspects of ESP that are important for developing of needs analysis. Secondly the description of the data collection process and the importance of the study will be presented. Finally, a detail description about the results of two questionnaires obtained through teachers’ and students’ experiences and perspectives."
A proposal to promote vocabulary in the EFL learning process

A Quantitative study of the certifications’ importance in the translation field

"As beginner translators, most of the graduate students from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla who are interested in doing a successful living as professional translators seem to be unable to assure the fulfilling of the requirements that it demands. In fact, the path to achieving it is long but necessary to acquire the experience and the training from those who are experts in this field. In order to get this dream, the certification in translation seems to be a plus for the translator´s curriculum but there are several opinions about it. Some expert translators do not necessarily recommend it. For instance, Clint (2016) points out that "a certification does not test your ability to run a successful business" (how to become a certified translator, 2016, para. 23). In addition, he also states: "The biggest factor in getting and keeping work is the quality of work you do, the way you treat your clients, and your overall professionalism" (ibid, para. 21). The interesting point, which becomes the problem of this study, is that most translation companies and expert translators warrant their translation services with certified translations or certified translators."
A syllabus proposal for teaching ‘menu design in esp’ for gastronomy students at a private university in Puebla

"Syllabuses are important in the teaching practice; some of them are focus on the learners’ needs and the course objectives. This study presents the proposal of a syllabus for teaching Menu Design in ESP for sixth semester focused on gastronomy learners’ eeds at Universidad Hotelera Suiza. In order to carry out this research it has been reviewed many expert authors in topics like: Syllabus and types of syllabus, this part allowed the researcher define the syllabus proposal as a Content- based syllabus because the main objective of this proposal is to teach specific gastronomy content (menu designing), other topics tackle in this study are: the differences about syllabus, curriculum and course plan, syllabus designing, English for Specific Purposes and Gastronomy students’ needs about learning English. After the application of a survey to the gastronomy students which give the researcher the data collection about what subject in the Gastronomy program they consider as a need to learn in an ESP class, the results showed Menu Design is the subject students are interested. Therefore, the final proposal includes the list of items that will help to teach a suitable content for the subject Menu designing in an ESP class".
